Let's get Rotherham talking

The Views from Rotherham consultation, held in 2015, highlighted that what people liked about Rotherham was its people: its friendliness, sense of community, openness and honesty. However, when asked about issues facing Rotherham there was talk of community tensions, loneliness, and isolation. The Rotherham Together Partnership has therefore decided to look at ways we can promote community relations through a simple initiative that will encourage residents to get to know each other better and increase social connectedness.

The initiative ‘A cuppa and a natter’

The proposal is to run a campaign to promote community spirit where people are encouraged to get to know their neighbour by joining them for a drink and chat. We are launching the campaign in June during volunteer month and it will culminate in an event in the town centre around Yorkshire Day, August 1st. However, we would aim for most of the activity to take place as the nights draw in.

The ‘Cuppa and a Natter’ initiative can be as big or as small as people want; for example it could simply be inviting a neighbour you know lives alone to your house or hosting an event at a local community centre/school or group. The aim is to encourage people to talk and get to know each other, build a sense of community and promote intergenerational activity, with the outcome of contributing a town where nobody feels lonely or isolated.

A task group of public agencies, voluntary sector organisations and businesses has been established to develop the campaign and to engage with potential partners and sponsors.

The Ask of Partners and Public

Partner organisations and members of the public are requested to support the campaign by;

  • Raising awareness of ‘Let’s get Rotherham Talking’ and how people can participate
  • Promote the campaign
  • Consider giving employees time out/off work – e.g. up to 2 hours to volunteer at a local ‘cuppa and natter’ event, or to transport an older person to a community event
  • Consider hosting an event at your business or in your neighbourhood
  • Hold an activity – in the launch period during June; around Yorkshire day (1st August) and in the colder months in winter when some people may feel further isolated
  • Capture what they do and tweet to @RMBCPress #letsgetrotherhamtalking on Twitter or otherwise record their activity and email it to us
  • Consider how future activity can be sustained
